2 Tips To Help Your Child If They Have Allergies

If you have a child that has allergies, they can be miserable during the warmer weather. To keep them from feeling like this, follow the tips below. This will ensure your child can have a great time this spring and summer, and will not have to spend all their time inside feeling bad.


Take your child to an allergy doctor to be tested if you have never done this. The doctor will do tests that will show you exactly what your child is allergic to so you can avoid these things. The allergist may test for allergies by doing a blood test, or they may do a skin test.

If they do a skin test, the doctor will pick or scratch a small area of skin, and place a drop of allergen on this area. They will continue doing this in different areas of your child's skin using different allergens. If your child is allergic to something, the test spot will swell and become red. The doctor will likely perform this test on your child's forearm or back.

There is a second type of skin test the doctor may choose to do. With this type, the suspected allergens will be injected into your child's skin on the forearm. Once the doctor finds what your child is allergic to, they can then prescribe the right type of medication for your child.


When you plan your vacations, plan them during non-allergy seasons. For example, if spring and summer are bad on your child's allergies, go skiing in the winter, or camping in the fall. If your child wants to attend summer camp, choose one that offers indoor activities, such as a computer or art camp.

Instead of having a picnic in your local park, go somewhere near water where there is likely less grasses and pollen. You could go to the ocean if you have one nearby, or go to a local lake.  Instead of outdoor sports, let your child join a swim team, a dance class, or a martial arts class. Limit activities in the morning, as the pollen count is highest from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m.

If your child spends time outside, tell them to take a shower or a bath when they come in just in case they bring in any pollen on their skin, hair, or clothing into the home.

Knowing the pollen levels in your area can be a big help in dealing with your child's allergies. You can also have it set up to receive emails on a regular basis telling you the current levels.
